Sunday, Dec. 6 is the date for the Greenfield Historical Society's annual Christmas Tour of Homes. The tour runs from 12-5 p.m. Five homeowners started early in July to prepare for this year's event. On the tour this year are the homes of Peter Quance and Julie McCray, 226 Mirabeau St.; Gene and Rosemary Kropfelder, 418 South St.; Jim and Madeline Grandy, 120 South St.; Bruce and Sue Ann Baird, 11885 State Rte. 138; and Steve and Mary Jane Parker, 13936 Titus Rd. (the corner of Titus and Rte. 138). Three homes are located in Greenfield and two are just west of town.
Four of the homes were built between 1860 and 1900, and one was built in 2002. Each home is distinctive and reflects the personalities of the homeowners. These are buildings you probably drove by and never realized the warm, inviting home that was constructed inside.
Tickets are only $10 and will go on sale Nov. 23 at the Home Building and Loan, Leesburg Federal, and Merchants and Fifth Third Banks, all located in Greenfield. Tickets may also be bought the day of the tour at any of the homes on the tour and at the Grain and Hay Building.
Along with touring some great spaces, you can dine at the Greenfield Grain and Hay on their traditional baked steak dinner. Serving will begin at 11:20 a.m. and continue until 4:30 p.m. or until they are sold out, which happens frequently. You can dine in or request carry out. Cost is only $8 for a delicious meal offering baked steak, potatoes, a veggie, rolls, drinks, and a dessert.
This year, there will be no drawing of door prizes for those who visited participating local merchants and all the tour stops. It was decided that it made too hectic a day and didn't give people time to shop and savor the merchants' displays and wares. Greenfield merchants will be holding their Holiday Open House the weekend of Nov. 28.
This event is one of the main fundraising projects of the Historical Society. All proceeds go into maintenance of buildings, payment of utilities, and keeping insurance coverage, just to name a few. The Society has six buildings that require constant upkeep. Everyone at the Society is a volunteer. However, fundraising is the Society's second goal; the first is keeping the history of Greenfield alive for the people of today and tomorrow through original structures, photographs, and objects. Plan to attend this festive event to help kick off your holiday season.
