Jim Weaver, the Great Lakes director for the American Radio Relay League, recently presented the Highland Amateur Radio Association a certificate recognizing the 30 years the local club has been an affiliated member of the national organization.
Amateur radio operators from Highland, Clinton, Adams, and Brown counties heard Dr. Weaver discuss matters concerning ham radio and the reasons for individual ARRL membership.
Although some state ham radio is a dying hobby, nothing could be further from the truth. Many local and state governments recognize amateur radio can get the message through when all else fails.
Therefore, many people are becoming licensed and a modest increase in the numbers of amateurs has been observed for the past few years. He stated ham radio is no longer the world of the old M##orse Code but the world of satellite and digital communications. Many schools around the world are now affording direct communication with the space shuttle through an educational program using ham radio.
Information about amateur radio can be obtained at www.arrl.org or the Highland Amateur Radio Assn., P.O. Box 203, Hillsboro.[[In-content Ad]]
