Adena Health System is celebrating Global Handwashing Day today, by promoting the benefits of proper hand hygiene in limiting the spread of illness and disease.

Today, visitors to Adena hospitals in Chillicothe, Greenfield and Waverly will receive personal hand sanitizer, and a reminder to protect themselves and their loved ones during their visit.

“Hand hygiene is the number one way to prevent the spread of disease and infection,” said Julie McCray, Adena’s Infection Prevention Manager. “We have been focused on our staff practicing prevention standards through proper hand hygiene for some time. We recognize that infection protection for our patients and community goes beyond the bedside caregiver.”

The focus of Global Handwashing Day is preventing the spread of drug resistant germs by urging healthcare workers to practice good hand hygiene when caring for patients. The intent is to protect patients from contracting infections when they are hospitalized.

In a report released from the World Health Organization, it has been confirmed that good hand hygiene practices lead to a reduction of infection caused by multidrug resistant organisms.
