Adena Cancer Center patients stay ‘connected’ thanks to gift

Patients at the Adena Cancer Center can spend many hours a day undergoing infusion treatments and more in their cancer journey. To help pass the time, Southern Ohio Survivors (SOS), a volunteer group that supports area cancer survivors and their families, recently donated eight Apple iPads, a charging station and 100 pairs of headphones to the Cancer Center.
Volunteers with SOS donated the iPads to help patients in the Cancer Center’s Infusion Department. The tablets are now giving patients an opportunity to read, search the internet or watch videos as they undergo chemotherapy or infusion treatments.
“It started with an idea to donate MP3 players, but that created some challenges since every patient has different musical tastes,” explained Levi McFadden, a volunteer with SOS. “We wanted to do something that was more user-friendly and multi-functional. With the iPads, patients can listen to music, watch a movie and even look at health apps and educational videos.”

This is just the latest act of kindness by SOS. The group also has a program to provide handmade crocheted hats and lap blankets for Adena Cancer Center patients. The items are helpful in keeping patients warm during therapy. The group also donates Holiday baskets and welcome gifts to patients.
“Southern Ohio Survivors has been extremely supportive of the Adena Cancer Center and our patients,” said Adena’s Director of Oncology Services, Lana Uhrig. “They recognize that our patients are sitting here, sometimes for long periods of time. They have a TV available to them, but the iPads will give them a chance to stay connected to the internet and social media during their treatments. It takes a whole community, and we are very appreciative of all that SOS does.”
Both parties are quick to thank the individuals and groups who made the generous iPad donation possible.
“We are fortunate to have a lot of support from the community,” McFadden said. “Recently, a patient died, and in lieu of flowers, his memorial contributions were made to SOS. We also have different fundraisers throughout the year like Paint the Creek and the Rudolph Run, which really help us do what we are able to do every day.”
