On Dec. 10, 1988, the first Luminaria night was held in the friendly village of Leesburg. It was a beautiful evening with snowflakes falling softly to cover the sidewalks and rooftops. The town was alight with the glow of candles shining through white luminaria bags.

Every year since then, the Leesburg Lions Club has sponsored this tradition. The Leesburg community businesses, churches and villagers place candles in white bags to light the streets to welcome the Christmas season.

This year, Luminaria Night will be held on Sunday, Dec. 13. On this special night, downtown businesses will host open houses, complete with plenty of goodies to enjoy, Santa will visit, a royal court will be crowned and the evening will end with a community service at the Fairfield School. Free wagon rides will be available throughout the evening to view the beautiful lights.

Door hangers with the schedule of events and other information have been passed out to all houses in Leesburg by the Leesburg cub scouts.

Luminaria Candle Kits will be on sale at Square One Heating and Cooling, Friday, Dec. 11 from 4-7 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 12 9 a.m.-4 p.m. The price of the kit is $8 (20 candles/20 bags). Sand is available if you bring your container.

If you have questions or concerns, contact a Leesburg Lions Club member at (937) 780-6204, 780-7611 or 780-6140.
