Rep. Mace to hold hearing on federal agency use of AI

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Subcommittee on Cybersecurity, Information Technology, and Government Innovation Chairwoman Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) will hold a Sept. 14 hearing titled “How are Federal Agencies Harnessing Artificial Intelligence?” 

The hearing will examine whether federal agencies are ready to harness the powerful benefits of AI to transform government operations. This hearing will explore how agencies are using AI now and the future use cases they envision.  

Potential risks in federal agency adoption of AI will be discussed, along with the adequacy of safeguards being put in place to protect individual privacy and ensure the fair and equal treatment of all citizens by their government.

“We are seeing every day how artificial intelligence is transforming business, medicine and other aspects of society," Mace said. 
 
"The federal government must harness the incredible potential of AI to achieve its various missions more effectively and efficiently. However, it is critical that before we let the genie out of the bottle we understand the unique risks of inappropriate use of AI by the federal government. Strict guardrails are needed to protect Americans’ privacy and prevent them from being victimized by algorithmic bias. This hearing is a great opportunity to discuss how AI can best be safely integrated into federal agency operations in a manner that enhances national and homeland security, streamlines service delivery, and make government more efficient.” 

The hearing titled “How are Federal Agencies Harnessing Artificial Intelligence?” Will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 14 at 2247 Rayburn House Office Building/

Witnesses include:

Dr. Arati Prabhaker, Director, White House Office of Science and Technology Policy;

Dr. Craig Martell, Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Officer, Department of Defense; and 

Mr. Eric Hysen, Chief Information Officer, Department of Homeland Security.

The hearing will be open to the public and press and will be livestreamed online at https://oversight.house.gov/
