Phyllis King

Phyllis King, 87, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2023.

Phyllis was born May 31, 1936 in Columbus and was a graduate of West High School.

She was a longtime member of the Hillsboro Church of the Nazarene, where she spent many years as choir director and leading various teen and children’s groups. Her love of Christian music and singing never faded.

Married to Douglas H. King on Nov 18, 1955, they enjoyed 57 years together before he went ahead to be with Jesus in 2012. While raising their six children, she became a school bus driver for the Bright Local School district and even taught two other people to drive. She joined ABX Air in Wilmington in 1981 and worked for 23 years, retiring in 2004.

Before she lost her sight to glaucoma and OCP (ocular cicatricial pemphigoid), she enjoyed sewing, painting and gardening. Her favorite word was “persevere.” She would use it whenever anyone asked how she was doing. She knew God had perfect sight and other wonderful things waiting in heaven for her, and so for her time here on earth, she “persevered.”

She is survived by her sons, Terry of Highland, Timothy (Ginny) of Hillsboro and Jerry of Winchester; her daughter, Joy (Vernon) Harris of Grove City; her daughter-in-law, Joy; siblings, Tom (Brenda) Doddridge, Lynne Ferguson and Paul Doddridge; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She leaves her loved ones rich in love and memories.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, Dean and Eleanor (Scott) Doddridge; her husband, Douglas; and two sons, Thomas and Jonathon King.

Memorial services will be held Thursday, Aug. 31, 2023 at 7 p.m. at the Hillsboro Church of the Nazarene. Pastor Tom Zile will officiate. Visitation will be held Thursday from 4 p.m. until time of service at 7 p.m.

I grew up in the church with this wonderful lady always singing and teaching. What a dear soul! I'm sending love and prayers out to all of the King family, that remain here.🙏 It is so hard...to lose your Mother. May you feel the comfort being sent. But this lady..., this lady here; is definitely...singing with the Angels, in Heaven.💓💞
