Ohio Rep. David Thomas introduces CASH Act

Representative David Thomas (R-Jefferson) this month introduced the CASH (Currency Access to Spend Here) Act, a bill aimed at ensuring all Ohioans have the ability to use cash for transactions at both private businesses and government entities. H.B. 554 would respond to concerns from constituents who have faced difficulties when businesses or government offices refused to accept cash as payment.

The CASH Act would require that for any transaction of $500 or less, businesses and government entities provide at least one point of sale that accepts cash. The bill is designed to balance the needs of both consumers and businesses by only requiring one cash-accepting register or payment option at each location.

This legislation mirrors a similar bipartisan bill introduced in Congress by Senators John Fetterman (D-Pa.) and Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.). The bill works to ensure that Ohioans can continue to use cash for everyday purchases and government transactions without facing unfair barriers.

“It's simple, cash is the basis for business in America. Our taxpayers should always have the ability to use cash in their daily lives," said Representative Thomas. 

"I hear from residents who may not trust virtual payment options or just prefer to use physical cash. This bill balances the needs of government and business to be efficient with the ability to still rely on physical currency.”

The CASH Act is a crucial step in protecting consumers' rights while supporting businesses and government services.

H.B. 554 awaits its first hearing in the House General Government Committee.
