Tyrone Jay Lawrence
Tyrone Jay Lawrence, 76, of Dayton, formerly of Hillsboro, passed away Thursday, April 11, 2024, at the Dayton VA Medical Center – Hospice Inpatient.
He was born Aug. 1, 1947, in Hillsboro, the son of the late Charles “Pete” Zimmerman, Sr. and Mary Frances (Powell) Lawrence.
Mr. Lawrence was a 1966 graduate of Hillsboro High School. After graduation, he proudly served his country in the United States Army, and he was awarded the Purple Heart for his bravery and wounds he received in Vietnam. Mr. Lawrence was wounded during a field operation between Cu-Chi and Tay-Ninh on Sept. 17. He was treated in a medical evacuation hospital in Cu-Chi and was later transferred to Japan and then to Valley Forge General Hospital in Phoenixville, Pa.
Mr. Lawrence enjoyed DJing, fishing and he was a member of the Dayton VFW. He was a Christian and a member of the Mt. Zion A.O.H. Church of God. Mr. Lawrence was a God-fearing man who loved life and was always willing to help anyone in need. He adored his daughter, granddaughter, family, and he will be greatly missed.
Mr. Lawrence is survived by his daughter, Gwen Cumberland; granddaughter, Tailynne Cumberland; seven sisters, Sherry (David) Young, Cathryn Zimmerman, Pamela Zimmerman, Carla (Wes) Burns, Terri (Lee) Smith, Kimberly Lawrence, and Kathleen Lawrence; three brothers, Eric Zimmerman, Carl Zimmerman and Rodney Zimmerman; an aunt, Marilyn Jackson; special friend, Judy Lawrence and her daughter, Cindy Chambers; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three siblings, Charlene Zimmerman, Karen Zimmerman and Charles Zimmerman Jr.
Visitation will be 11:00 a.m.-1 p.m. Thursday, April 18 at the New Hope Baptist Church in Hillsboro. Funeral services will follow visitation at 1 p.m. April 18 at the church.
Military honors, presented by the Highland County Honor Guard, will follow services outside of the New Hope Baptist Church. Burial will be held in the Dayton National Cemetery at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 25.
