Siegal L. Burba, 86, of Springfield, Va., passed away peacefully on Monday, Aug. 5, 2024 at Sunrise at Silas Burke House, Burke, Va. with family by his side after a long, brave battle with Parkinson’s disease.
Siegal was born April 6, 1938, in Hillsboro, the son of the late Harriett E. (Shoemaker) Burba and Paul Burdette Burba.
He proudly served his country as a sergeant in the U.S. Army in the 3rd Armored Division Artillery from Aug. 11, 1955-July 24, 1958, temporarily leaving high school. He graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1959 with fellow classmate and later that same year married his wife of 64 years Brenda Dillard Burba on Christmas Eve. They left Hillsboro in 1959 to live in Washington, D.C. then Maryland, and ultimately the family home in Kings Park of Springfield, Va. since November 1974. Siegal began his career with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and retired from the FBI as a systems analyst in 1993 after a 33-year career. He also worked in private industry after federal retirement.
Siegal was a wonderful husband, dad, grandpa, and great-grandpa. When the children were young, he loved family summer vacations in a filled-to-the-brim station wagon including the family poodle, April, heading back to Hillsboro, Ohio to visit relatives (staying at Cowan Lake) or to Montego Bay in Ocean City, Md. He loved the lake, beach and to go boating or fishing. He loved a home filled with family for holiday gatherings and birthdays. He enjoyed working on cars including rebuilding them from a junk yard as well as building and repairing computers. He enjoyed attending children’s, grandchildren’s, or great-grandchildren’s sports, scouts, as well as taking the family to the local indoor or outdoor pools. His love of sports included the Washington Redskins with the Hogs/Joe Theisman and Joe Gibbs, Cincinnati Bengals, Ohio State Buckeyes, Washington Nationals and Cincinnati Reds. He also enjoyed the old-time TV Westerns and collecting books written by John Grisham as well as solving Sudoku puzzles. He loved playing Bingo (like his Mom) through the years including at Sunrise. Siegal enjoyed his neighbors in Kings Park and kept in touch with his FBI retired coworkers with monthly breakfasts at Denny's. He was beloved at Sunrise by friends and his caretakers.
In addition to his wife, Brenda, he is also survived by his five children, including two sons and three daughters, in order of birth, Derek Burba (Debra) of Burke, Va.; Angie Thomas of Warrenton, Va.; Deron Burba (Kim) of Lorton, Va.; Anita Tolliver of Herndon, Va.; and Andrea Patterson of Springfield, Va. 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, coinciding in order of the five children, Jennifer Keenaghan (son Conor) and Jessica Douglas (Mike) son Andrew; Heather Hertrich (Tim) and Travis Thomas (Brandy); Cassie, Spencer, and Sean Burba; Justin and Jonathan Tolliver; Amanda and Allyson Patterson. Also surviving are one brother, Daniel Burba (Roswita) of Orlando, Fla.; and a sister-in-law Beverly Rhoads of Hillsboro.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers and one sister-in-law, Terry L. Burba, Richard R. and Janet (Stultz) Burba, David L. Burba and Gerald L. Burba.
A visitation will be held at Fairfax Memorial Funeral Home, 9902 Braddock Road Fairfax, Va. on Tuesday, Aug. 13 from 6-8 p.m. A celebration of his life held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 17 at the Turner & Son Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Hillsboro Cemetery, with military rites to be accorded by the Highland County Honor Guard. Family will receive friends from 10:30-11:30 a.m. until time of service on Saturday at the funeral home. Contributions may be made to any Parkinson's Foundation.
