Ralph R. Pence
Ralph R. Pence passed away peacefully July 8, 2024 at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton with his loving wife Marilyn at his side.
He was born Jan. 11, 1938 in Hillsboro, the son of the late W. Ralph Pence and Sarah (Rogers) Pence.
Ralph was called Buddy early on. He embraced life and the people around him – a “Buddy” to all. As a young boy, Buddy formed a strong work ethic, delivering the Cincinnati Enquirer to many customers and working at Albers Grocery and with the County Highway Crew.
In 1956, he graduated from Hillsboro High School. He also received his B.A. degree from Georgetown College in Georgetown, Ky. After graduating, he joined the U.S. Army and was given an honorable discharge in 1963. On June 30, 1963, he married Marilyn (West) Pence.
After returning from the Army, he was employed with South Central Power Company. In 1980, he earned his master’s degree in education from Miami University. Buddy taught social studies and coached football at Hillsboro High School. Working with and mentoring the many students that passed through his classes was a very rewarding experience for him.
He was an avid reader and had a talent for writing. He wrote the Ohio History eighth grade textbook which was used in Hillsboro school system for many years.
In furthering his education, Buddy enrolled in courses at Xavier University. In a particular class, he wrote a paper entitled “Travel Without Power” which was well received. The professor asked if the paper could be kept to be included in future publications.
Buddy was active in community affairs. In 1969, he was the Highland County Cancer Drive chairman. Later in life, the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of Ohio honored him for being a Master Mason and a member in good standing of the Masonic fraternity for 60 years, a lifetime commitment. Buddy also lived an active community life during the time he and Marilyn wintered in Mesa, Ariz. He served as president of the Mesa Spirit RV Resort Church Board. While there, he enjoyed hiking and biking throughout the area.
Traveling to other countries was of special interest to him. As a couple, they traveled to all 50 states, experienced several trips to Canada and Mexico and traveled extensively throughout Europe. A highlight of their travel was teaching English at Wuhan University in Wuhan, China. As a result of their work, several Chinese students earned advanced degrees in the United States.
For many years, he was a dedicated and successful gardener. He will be remembered for his friendliness, quick wit, ready smile and laughter. Buddy viewed the world with great positivity.
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn; his sons, Tom W. (Julie) Pence and Patrick W. Pence; grandchildren, Christopher Pence, Emily Pence, Nicholas Pence and Drake Pence; his sister, Madeleine Crouse; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Diana Rhody and Patty Pence; and his brother, David Pence.
The family wishes to express gratitude for the care Buddy has received from Dr. Gunderman, Highland District Hospital doctors and staff, the staff at The Laurels of Hillsboro, Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton and all of the many prayer groups that have continuously prayed for his well-being.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 16 at the convenience of the family. Reverend Thomas Wilson will officiate. Burial with military honors rendered by the Highland County Veterans Honor Guard will follow in the Hillsboro Cemetery. Friends and family are invited to attend a visitation Monday, July 15 from 5-8 p.m. at the Turner & Son Funeral Home in Hillsboro. Masonic services will be conducted Monday at 7:45 p.m. at the funeral home.
