Martha 'Marty' Jo (Ames) Gillespie

Martha “Marty” Jo (Ames) Gillespie, 82, of New Vienna, passed away Monday, Oct. 14, 2024 in the Miami Valley Hospital.

She was born in New Antioch, following the birth of her identical twin sister, on Jan. 20, 1942, the daughter of the late Samuel “Clair” and Esther (Hunt) Ames.

Marty graduated from New Vienna High School in 1960 and from Springfield City Hospital School of Nursing as a Registered Nurse in 1963. Marty and her twin sister, Mary, were inseparable while growing up on the farm just outside of New Vienna, and they enjoyed confusing family and friends about which one they were as it was difficult to tell them apart. They enjoyed 4-H, attending Fairfield Friends Church, riding and showing horses, and helping on the farm.

Marty spent most of her nursing career serving the MRDD clients in nursing homes, group homes and later in her career working in private homes specializing in disabled children. At one time, she was both Director of Nursing and QMRP in the Hillsboro group homes. She took great pride in being a nurse and caring for others.

Marty returned to New Vienna in 1985 after living in Grove City for several years. She attended the New Vienna Methodist Church, where she played the piano, organ, directed the choir for a time, played in the bell choir and sang on the praise team.

She is survived by a sister-in-law, Jean Ames of New Vienna; a son, Bret (Martha) Gillespie of Grove City; two daughters, Shari Gillespie of New Vienna and Dawn (Kerry) Barker of Wilmington; eight grandchildren, Devin (Jamie) Gillespie, Brittany and Paul Gillespie, Savonna Nerlinger, Cassidy (Wyatt) DeWeese and Nathan, Rachel and Collin Barker; and three great-grandchildren, Joshua Gillespie, Mack DeWeese and Kaelan Gillespie.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Norman and Roger Ames; two sisters, Mary Arnold and Ruth Humphreys, and a brother-in-law, Gary Arnold.

There will be no formal service at this time. Celebration of Marty’s life will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family. The Turner & Son Funeral Home and Crematory is serving the family.
