Loren Elwood Karnes
Loren Elwood Karnes, 91, of Hillsboro, passed away Sunday, May 14, 2023, at Bell Gardens Place in Hillsboro.
He was born Feb. 21, 1932 on the family farm in Hillsboro, the son of the late Clarence Elwood Karnes and Blanche (DeWitt) Karnes.
Loren was a 1951 graduate of McClain High School. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy on the Destroyer USS Isherwood from 1955-57. After his duty in the Navy, he returned home to raise cattle, sheep and hogs on the farm. He also did custom spraying for farmers around the area. He was a lifetime member of the Fall Creek Friends Church, a bus driver for the Greenfield School District for 33 years, and a former greeter at Kmart in Hillsboro. Loren loved to walk his property and to wave at his neighbors, who were also his good friends, and passers-by. Many people referred to him as their “bus driver.” He enjoyed riding on his Gator, watching the Cincinnati Reds, traveling, especially the many group trips to Hawaii, Las Vegas, Florida and Branson, Mo. Loren was a hard worker who loved his family. He will be greatly missed.
Mr. Karnes is survived by his son, Doug Lee (Mechell) Karnes of Hillsboro; two grandchildren, Jackson Douglas Karnes of Lexington, Ky. and Nicole Sophia Karnes of Louisville, Ky.; two nieces, Charlotte Stewart and Calvalene Karnes; and numerous other nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Roberta Lou (Smith) Karnes on Dec. 1, 2020; and a brother, Calvin Karnes.
Visitation will be 1-3 p.m. Friday May 19 at the Fall Creek Friends Church, 11345 Karnes Road, Hillsboro. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. May 19 at the church. H. Scott Latimer will be officiating. Burial will follow in the Stringtown Cemetery.

So sorry to hear of Loren's…
So sorry to hear of Loren's passing. He will be forever remembered as the bus driver! In all the years we rode his bus, there was only one time he couldn't get us through the snow drifts! Hugs and prayers Doug for you and your family.
