Joseph A. Smithson
Joseph A. Smithson, 91, of Clarksville, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2023 at his home.
He was born Nov. 29, 1932 in Clarksville, the son of the late James N. and Mellie J. (Hill) Smithson. On Aug. 11, 1960, he married Helen (DeBoard) Smithson, who passed away March 22, 2023.
Joseph was a United States Army veteran of the Korean War. He retired from General Motors as a machine repairman and attended Bethany Baptist Church. He loved the outdoors, gardening and taking care of his yard, but most importantly, he provided for his family.
Surviving are three daughters, Lorna (Mack) Kiser, Joetta Smithson and Cyndi (Jerry) Merriman; grandchildren, Bryan (Marilin) Fisher, Shara Cox, Mallory (John) Dittly, Tiffany Ailshire, Brandon (Cheryl) Kennison, Liberty (Rick) Goodman, Julie (Tim) Kelley, Emily Holden and Jared (Liz) Merriman; 19 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; two sisters-in-law, Anna Mae Williams and Marlene DeBoard; brother, Robert (Joyce) Smithson; and special friends: Marian and Fred Elam, Mary and Sarah, and Doug Fisher.
In addition to his parents and wife, Joseph was preceded in death by a daughter, Sharon Kay Fisher; daughter and son-in-law, Denise and Kenny Ailshire; brother and sister-in-law, Harold and Janet Smithson; sister and brother-in-law, Marjorie and Quinten Culbertson; and sister and brother-in-law, Anna Lou and Gene Valentine.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Dec. 23, 2023 at 11 a.m. at Fisher-Edgington Funeral Home, 97 W. Locust St., Wilmington, with Pastor Tim Bradshaw officiating. Interment will follow in the Miami-Corwin Cemetery, Waynesville.
Friends will be received Friday, Dec. 22, 2023 from 4-7 p.m. at Fisher-Edgington Funeral Home.
