John K. Smart

John K. Smart, 86, of Chillicothe, passed away Saturday, March 15, 2025 at the Vineyards of Concord, Frankfort. 

He was born Nov. 24, 1938 in Ross County, a son of the late Roy A. and Helen L. Kerns Smart. 

John was a 1958 graduate of Frankfort High School. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy. He worked in military communications for several years and then worked with the Central Intelligence Agency. John was a HAM Radio operator under the letters K8GHL. He was a member of the American Legion Post 62, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and AmVets Post 4. John loved to spend time fishing and always looked forward to each spring so he could enjoy his time in the woods hunting mushrooms. 
 
John was married to the former Virginia Glandon on March 8, 1965, and she preceded him in death on Jan. 29, 2007. 
 
He is survived by their daughter, Evie Snyder of Chillicothe, his longtime companion, Nancy Light and her family, who John loved as his own; six grandchildren, Julienne Branham, Taite Ackley, Layton Ackley, Bryan Smart, Kariann Smart and Waylon Smart; 10 great-grandchildren; one sister, Betty Morgan of Frankfort; two brothers, Harold Joe Smart of Chillicothe and George (Kathleen) Smart of Marysville. His special K-9 companion and friend, Annie, will miss John as well. 

John was preceded in death by his son, John S. Smart on July 21, 2015.
 
Relatives and friends are invited to a military graveside service on Friday, March 21 at 2:30 p.m. at the Twin Township Cemetery, Bourneville. In keeping with John’s wishes, no public calling hours will be held.
