John 'Johnny' W. Newman

John “Johnny” W. Newman, 87, of Hillsboro, passed away peacefully Thursday, Jan. 25, 2024 at The Laurels of Hillsboro. 

He was born Feb. 28, 1936 in Fayette County, the son of the late Orville Newman and Tennie (Ball) Newman England. 

Johnny was a member of the Walnut Hill Christian Union Church, and he proudly served his country in the Army National Guard. He farmed all his life off Old Charleston Road, and he also drove a school bus for the Greenfield Exempted Village Schools for several years. 

Johnny enjoyed listening to and playing bluegrass on his guitar. During the summertime, he and his wife, Shirley, loved to camp and travel to bluegrass festivals. He will be greatly missed. 

Johnny is survived by his wife of 52 years, Shirley (Wright) Newman, whom he married Jan. 3, 1972; three children, Mark Newman of Leesburg, Rhonda Newman Smith of Leesburg and Cheryl Newman of New Vienna; three grandchildren, Beth Smith, Kristy Smith and Amanda (Michael) Newman McFadden; seven great-grandchildren, Lane Sparks, Abbey Smith, Annie Smith, Kylie May, Kendall May, Stella McFadden and Dalton McFadden; two stepchildren, Diane (Bobby) Seeling of S. Lebanon and Richard Musser of Waverly; three step-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Bub Sass; a sister-in-law, Julia Newman; sisters and brothers-in-law, Carol and Mike Moses of Hillsboro and Ronnie and Jane Wright of Washington C.H.; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary E. (Butler) Newman; six siblings, Orville “Bucky” Newman, Ethel (Maurice) Mann, Stella (Robert) Graves, Elsie “Becky” (William) Schubert, Daisy Sass and Hazel (Ed) Wisecup. 

Visitation will be held Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2024 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Turner & Son Funeral Home in Hillsboro. Funeral services will take place following visitation Tuesday, Jan. 30 at 1 p.m. John Fitzgerald will be officiating. Burial, with military honors presented by the Highland County Veterans Honor Guard, will be held in the Resthaven Memory Gardens following services.
