Joan Marie Smith

Joan Marie Smith, 90, of Hillsboro, passed away peacefully Friday, March 31, 2023 at the Crestwood Skill Nursing Center.

She was born May 31, 1932 in New Boston, the daughter of the late Joseph and Margaret Anna (Henthorn) Behmer.

Joan was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Hillsboro. She enjoyed crocheting and playing card games, especially canasta, and she loved spending time with her family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will be greatly missed.

Joan is survived by her two sons, James Joseph Smith of Chandler, Ariz. and Gregory Anthony (Rebecca) Smith of New Vienna; six grandchildren, Kimberly Ann (Bill) Roode of Wilmington, Tiffany Michelle (Cody) Shaw of Bainbridge, Anna Marie Smith of Arizona, Alyssa Nichole Smith of Arizona, Bryan Adam (Elizabeth) Smith of Hillsboro and Sarah Jean (Brian) Maxwell of Wilmington; five great-grandchildren, Clarissa Carmel Shaw, Lanie Alivia Shaw, Hayden Matthew Smith, Benjamin Adam Smith and Avery James Maxwell; a sister, Belinda Hooker of North Carolina; and several nieces, nephews and friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George Smith, on March 10, 1997; an infant son, Georgie Phillip Smith; grandson, Steven Michael Smith; great-granddaughter, Gabrielle Marie Smith; and a sister, Judith Cogley.

Visitation will be held Thursday, April 6, 2023 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Turner & Son Funeral Home in Hillsboro. Funeral services will take place following visitation Thursday, April 6 at 1 p.m. Burial will follow services in the Fairfax Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Joan’s name to the American Cancer Society, PO Box 6704, Hagerstown, Md. 21741.
