James M. “Jim” Hakes
James M. “Jim” Hakes, 82, of Lynchburg, passed away peacefully Tuesday, May 21, 2024 at his home.
He was born Sept. 10, 1941 in Springfield, the son of the late Raymond and Hattie Imogene (Cowman) Hakes.
He retired in 2004 from Ferno Washington in Wilmington after 45 years of service and was a member of the Dodsonville Community Church. Jim was an avid golfer, wood worker, fisherman and loved his church.
He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Kay (Wynn) Hakes, whom he married on Sept. 19, 1987 in Lynchburg. He is also survived by a daughter, Tina Brown of Washington Court House; three step-kids Jay (Jenny) Mineer of Wilmington, and Jill Luneke and Jan (Tim) Groves, both of Lynchburg; eight grandchildren, Lynn Pierson of Sabina, Erica (Urbano) Vazquez of Mount Sterling, Christopher (Tonda) Osborn of Washington Court House, Zach Mineer of Fort Liberty, N.C., Keith (fiancée Maddie Hillard) Mineer of Batavia, Cody Griffith of Wilmington, Kyle Luneke of Bahrain and Josh Groves of Lynchburg; 10 great-grandchildren; seven great-great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and many friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, James M. Hakes II; his son-in-law, Randy Brown; four brothers and three sisters.
Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, May 29 at the Davis-Turner Funeral Home in Lynchburg, where a funeral service will be held on Thursday, May 30 at 11 a.m. Pastor Ray Cooper will officiate. Burial will follow in the Troutwine Cemetery.
