Gwendolyn (Gwen) S. Brownlee

Gwendolyn (Gwen) S. Brownlee, 89, of Seaman, passed away peacefully Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2024 at her home. 

She was born May 22, 1934 in Adams County, the daughter of the late William Jefferson Smalley and Nellie Madge (Lytle) Smalley. 

Gwen was a 1952 graduate of Peebles High School. After marrying her late husband, William, Gwen and her family moved to Hillsboro, where she worked for several years as a deputy clerk under Judges James and John Hapner, as well as John Crouse. 

She was a member of the Hillsboro Church of Christ for over 50 years and more recently a member of the Countryside Church of Christ in Seaman. Gwen enjoyed being a Girl Scout leader, and she proudly earned her concealed carry license at the age of 70. She was a fantastic cook, and she was well known for her chicken and noodles, apple pies, berry pies and homemade rolls, which she always made for their family reunions. Gwen also enjoyed canning, gardening and spending time with her family and grandchildren. She will be greatly missed. 

She is survived by her two daughters, Julie (Kirk) Knoblauch of Wilmington and Jennifer (Josh) Parrott of Cincinnati; four grandchildren, Beth (Josh) Klaene of Boston, Mass., Lindsay (Brad) Rokicki of Cincinnati, Claire Stirsman of Cincinnati and Lydia Gwen-Marie Parrott of Cincinnati; four great-grandchildren, Reznor, Wyatt, Layla and Henry; one brother, Blanchard Paul Smalley of Maryland; and several nieces and nephews. 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Earl Brownlee, on May 13, 2002; four sisters, Mildred Cobbler, Mary Edith Ryan, Ann Foster and Alberta Johnson; four brothers, Henry Smalley, Forest Smalley, Richard Smalley and Kenneth Smalley; and dear friend Karen Steele. 

Visitation will be held Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2024 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Countryside Church of Christ, 468 Tranquility Pike, Seaman, Ohio 45679. Funeral services will take place following visitation on Tuesday, Jan. 16 at 1 p.m. at the church. Pastor Hannum Taylor will be officiating. Burial will follow services in the Evergreen Cemetery.
