Betty JoAnn (Hunter) Smith

Betty JoAnn Smith (née Hunter), 72, of Wilmington, passed away Wednesday, March 22, 2023, surrounded by her family.

She was born Dec. 5, 1950.

She was the beloved wife of Carliss R. Smith; devoted mother of Rhonda (Mark) Bond, Carliss Jr (Cheri) Smith, Michael (Shaunda) Smith and JoAnna (Aaron) Powell; grandmother of Kathy Smith, Samantha (Brad) Constant, Daniel Smith, Brandon Smith, Rebecca Smith, Mikey Smith, Brett Smith, Renee Smith, Aubrey Powell and Gabrielle Powell; and great-grandmother of Mia Constant, Azaria Constant and Shirley Clifton. She is also survived by her brother, Arnold (Carol) Hunter; a special niece, Sandy Taylor; a lifetime best friend, Charlise Mattos; many nieces and nephews; and other special family members.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Laymond and Manerva Hunter; and siblings Arlene King, David Hunter and Daniel Hunter. 

A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 1 at 11 a.m. at Wilmington Assembly of God, 609 W. Locust St., Wilmington, with Pastor Craig Dawley officiating. Immediately following the service, there will be a memorial luncheon served at the church.
