Work set to begin on Route 785 culvert

Officials from the Ohio Department of Transportation – District 9 are working to expedite an emergency repair project on state Route 785 in Highland County (Jackson Township), and construction is likely to begin later this week.
Surveyors from the Shelly Company were on site Monday, Aug. 22.
The 3.6-mile long state highway between Fairfax and Belfast has been closed since Wednesday, Aug. 17, after heavy storms and flash flooding caused a large culvert to collapse and the pavement to give way.
The section of road that has been lost is located immediately east of its junction with Township Road 186 (Burgess Road).
“Staff from our planning and engineering are working to move a project forward with a Type A emergency contract that will allow construction to begin immediately so that we can restore the route to traffic as quickly as possible,” ODOT District 9 Deputy Director Vaughn Wilson said.
Currently, the district’s design and geotechnical engineers are outlining the project, coordinating utilities and establishing materials needed to replace the culvert, and it is anticipated that a contractor will be able to mobilize crews and begin work this week.
Although a timeline to complete the project has yet to be determined, construction could take three to four weeks, and while S.R. 785 remains closed, motorists will continue to be detoured via S.R. 73 and S.R. 247.
Local motorists also are using the Locust Road to Rocklick Road to Burgess Road detour.
