Wilkin appointed commission president WATCH THE VIDEO

The Highland County Board of Commissioners met for their organizational meeting Monday, and re-elected Shane Wilkin as board president. 

Commissioner Tom Horst made a motion that Wilkin remain as president, and that Horst remain as vice president. Commissioner Jeremy Shaffer seconded the motion, which was passed 3-0. 

The commissioners also passed a resolution discontinuing the quarterly meetings held in Greenfield. Horst said that the last time the commissioners met there the meetings did not have a high attendance. Wilkin said that the commissioners would notify Greenfield City Manager Betty Bishop and that they would make themselves available for special meetings if a need should arise.

Horst also said that he wanted the board to consider changing the weekly meeting day from Wednesday to another day. 

"I don't know if you noticed, but the County Commissioners Association has been having training on a regular basis on Wednesdays in Columbus," Horst said, noting that the current meeting day prohibits Highland County commissioners from attending. The manufacturing council also meetings on Wednesdays, he said.

Horst said that many boards of commissioners meet on Mondays, and that is why the commissioners association meets on Wednesdays.

Shaffer said the safety council also meets on Wednesdays.

Horst said that he would rather not meet on a Monday, and suggested Tuesday as an option. 

Commission clerk Debbie Sansone said that a change in the meeting day would not affect her or the paperwork she prepares, but Horst suggested that the board check with Highland County Auditor Bill Fawley. 

"I'll make myself available for whatever day we do it," Wilkin said. "As much as we have late resolutions come after bill pays (the auditor should be consulted)."

"We could change it at any time during the year," Horst said. 

The commissioners passed a resolution to set the meeting day for Wednesdays, but indicated they would continue to discuss the matter.  

In other business, the commissioners: 

• Voted to appoint Shaffer to serve on the Joint Solid Waste Management District Policy Committee for 2011. 

• Voted to authorize the re-hire of county employees, a yearly resolution that is passed. 

• Voted to appoint members for the Community Development Block Grant complaint procedure. 

• Voted to authorize travel for the board of commissioners for 2011, with Horst noting the commissioners are not reimbursed for travel. 

• Voted to appoint Shaffer to the RC&D.
