More than 1,000 Ohio workers face likely layoffs according to WARN (Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act) notices filed with the state in the first two weeks of 2016.

Employers are covered by the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act if they have 100 or more employees, not counting employees who have worked less than six months in the last year and not counting employees who work an average of less than 20 hours a week.

Recent WARN notices on file with the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services include 315 pending layoffs at the Eddie Bauer, LLC Express Call Center in Groveport, 242 pending layoffs at Republic Steel in Lorain and another 162 pending layoffs at Warren Steel Holdings in Trumbull County.

Seven Ohio companies have announced total pending layoffs of 1,034 workers since Jan. 1.

WARN notices are designed to provide protection to workers, their families and communities by requiring employers to provide notification 60 calendar days in advance of plant closings and mass layoffs.

Advance notice provides workers and their families some transition time to adjust to the prospective loss of employment, to seek and obtain alternative jobs and, if necessary, to enter skill training or retraining that will allow these workers to successfully compete in the job market.

WARN also provides for notice to state dislocated worker units so that dislocated worker assistance can be promptly provided.
