War memorial moved to new location

The war memorial that previously stood on the south lawn of the Highland County Courthouse has been moved to its new, permanent location, along with monuments commemorating soldiers from the Revolutionary through Afghanistan wars. 

Highland County Commissioner Tom Horst said that the remodeling of the memorial is nearing completion. 

On Tuesday, Justin Harsha of the Harsha Monument Company of Hillsboro, moved the memorial and installed the new stones, with the assistance of a crane company out of Cincinnati, according Horst.  

Ground was broken for the new memorial, located on the southwest corner of the courthouse property, during Memorial Day 2011. A dedication for the completed monument is scheduled for Memorial Day 2012. 

The effort of creating the new memorial has become a community project. 

In early March, Shawn Dance of Dance Excavating did work on the memorial, Randy Gilbert Construction did electrical work, and Ford Excavating hauled gravel for the project. 

"I think it's really good that the community is pitching in like this," Horst said. 

Individual bricks that have been sold by VFW Post 9094 commemorating individual soldiers will be installed, along with flagpoles to represent each branch of the military. 

"Around the beginning of April, we should have it looking pretty nice," Horst said.
