Vietnam Veterans Traveling Tribute coming to Liberty Park May 27-31

Support Our Troops Of Highland County is set to present the Vietnam Veterans Traveling Tribute, “The Wall,” at Liberty Park in Hillsboro, May 27-31.

The year 2014 marked the 10th anniversary of SOTOHC, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, and as a way to give back to the community and veterans who have helped support them all these years, they felt that this would be a fitting way to say “thank you.”
 
The summer of 2014 also marked the 20th anniversary since a similar Vietnam Veterans Traveling Wall display was first-ever held in Highland County, at almost the exact same location. For these two significant dates, as well as the fact that the year 2015 marks the 50th anniversary of the official beginning of the Vietnam War for America, also marking the 40th anniversary of the end of the War in Vietnam, SOTOHC and the VVTT Committee hope that you, your business or your organization would consider joining in helping pay tribute to our veterans in this most solemn tribute.
 
Though the planning for this tribute event has been in the works for over a year now, SOTOHC created a separate committee early last summer, the Vietnam Veterans Traveling Tribute Committee, which is made up of several SOTOHC members, along with many local veterans and Highland County community members. The official fundraising to make this happen just kicked off this past Labor Day weekend, and on Jan. 1, 2015, the many efforts of this committee had raised nearly $14,000, making “The Wall’s” visit possible.

There will be other tributes in conjunction with “The Wall,” and with that, there are ongoing fundraisers taking place, several of which will run through the duration of the special tribute event. The VVTT Committee is still currently seeking local and regional businesses, organizations and private individuals to help assist in this history-making event right here in our community.

Monetary donations are a priority to help cover the additional tributes coming in, along with necessary services and supplies (e.g. electric service and supplies, portable water hook-up, portable restroom facilities, trash facilities, a mandatory liability insurance coverage, etc.) that will be required to host an event of this scale.

Volunteers are being accepted, as there are several aspects of this event that will require additional people to help make the entire event run smoothly. Anyone interested in volunteering should attend any of the upcoming meetings to learn how they can help. We welcome not only individuals, but organizations, clubs and businesses to help and are sure that they each have something to bring to this cause, helping to make it even better for our veterans, their families and our community.
