Uptown merchants, historical society to hold sidewalk event this weekend

The merchants of Uptown Hillsboro and the Highland County Historical Society are bringing out the best of what local merchants have to offer during a joint antique and sidewalk sale, as well as a community yard sale scheduled for this Saturday. 

The historical society is holding an antique and collectables sale in the old Hillsboro fire department, located on North High Street, and the Hillsboro Uptown Business Association is sponsoring a sidewalk sale of area merchants. 

"The historical society is hosting our first annual antiques and collectables sale Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.," said society member Bob Lambert. "It's a chance for local residents to buy and sell antiques and collectables to benefit the society's general fund programs."

Lambert said among the programs the funds will support is the temperance march the society has scheduled for Sept. 18, as well as operating funds. 

"There is plenty of free parking, there is no charge to come in to the sale, and we have a wide assortment of furniture, collectables and glassware, as well as introducing the Beech Street Candleworks which is a new line of fragrant candles manufactured here in Hillsboro and distributed nationally. For Christmas, they are making a commemorative candle for the society."

More than a dozen vendors are scheduled to display at the sale, and free drinks will be provided, according to Lambert.  

The Hillsboro City Council voted to waive the yard sale permit fees all day Saturday to promote a community-wide yard sale. 

"We're doing it all at the same time," Lambert said. "It's a great way to show support for the 'Buy Local' campaign that the Highland County Chamber of Commerce is promoting. It's a great way to get out and visit with old neighbors and visit the uptown shops." 

Rachelle Trefz of the HUBA said, "We're just hoping to bring people into Uptown and maybe make them more aware of some of the little shops we have here in Hillsboro."
