Lupus is a chronic, autoimmune disease that can damage any part of the body (skin, joints, and/or organs inside the body). Chronic means that the signs and symptoms tend to last longer than six weeks and often for many years.

According to the Lupus Foundation of America (http://www.lupus.org/), "In lupus, something goes wrong with the body's immune system, which is the part of the body that fights off viruses, bacteria, and germs ('foreign invaders,' like the flu). Normally, our immune system produces proteins called antibodies that protect the body from these invaders. Autoimmune means your immune system cannot tell the difference between these foreign invaders and your body’s healthy tissues and creates autoantibodies that attack and destroy healthy tissue. These autoantibodies cause inflammation, pain, and damage in various parts of the body.

"Lupus is not contagious. You cannot 'catch' lupus from someone or 'give' lupus to someone. Lupus can range from mild to life-threatening and should always be treated by a doctor. With good medical care, most people with lupus can lead a full life."

Lupus Foundation research estimates that at least 1.5 million Americans have lupus. More than 16,000 new cases of lupus are reported annually across the country. It is believed that 5 million people throughout the world have a form of lupus.

The Sisters 3 team encourages the community to support this fundraiser, either by walking on May 9 or by making a contribution by going to: http://walktoendlupusnow.kintera.org/faf/search/searchTeamPart.asp?ievent=1126677&lis=1&kntae1126677=09F5BB581BC24768AED48C15A1A72AE2&team=6316393

The “Walk To End Lupus Now” is the largest gathering of lupus patients in the Cincinnati. The purpose is to bring together all those affected by lupus to raise the much needed funds to carry out the mission of the Lupus Foundation of America, GOC.

"Financial support is needed and so is your presence to help us bring Lupus Foundation of America programs and services to Cincinnati while we do research to solve the cruel mystery of lupus," according to Walk To End Lupus Now.

This year's walk is a paved course in downtown Cincinnati beginning at Fountain Square. Lupus patients are encouraged to walk with their family and friends. Wheelchairs and strollers are permitted. A minimum of a $20 donation for each participant (ages 11+) is required to participate in this event.
