SSCC Theatre presents “Radium Girls,” by D.W. Gregory, playing November 8-10 in the Edward K. Daniels Auditorium on Southern State Community College’s Central Campus, 100 Hobart Drive, Hillsboro. The Friday and Saturday performances begin at 7:30 p.m.; the Sunday matinee begins at 3:30 p.m.
In 1926 radium was a miracle cure. Madame Curie was an international celebrity, and luminous watches were the latest rage—until the girls who painted them began to fall ill with a mysterious disease. Inspired by a true story, “Radium Girls” traces the efforts of Grace Fryer (played by Johanna Kelley), a dial painter, as she fights for her day in court. Her chief adversary is her former employer, Arthur Roeder (Mark Holmes), an idealistic man who cannot bring himself to believe that the same element that shrinks tumors could have anything to do with the terrifying rash of illnesses among his employees. As the case goes on, however, Grace finds herself battling not just with the U.S. Radium Corporation, but with her own family and friends, who fear that her campaign for justice will backfire.
The cast includes Caspian Barstow, Bob Brown, Paula Campagna, Ivy Garrison, Nia Gibson, Camden Griffith, Madison Hatfield, Chelsea Heifner, Ian Holmes, Ally Hutchins, Bronwyn Jones, Jozlyn Napier, Logan Savage, Payton Taylor, and Sarah Wuellner.
The production team includes Rainee Angles (director), Brent Angles and Rainee Angles (production design), Zanna Haines (costumes), Chelsea Heifner (dramaturgy), Benjamin Gullett (public relations), and Brendan Bell (stage manager). Fulfilling other crew positions are Sarah Jo Beyersdoerfer, D.J. Eckman, McKenna Hatfield, Amber Lytle, Amber Pickering-Polstra, Taylor Stanfield, and Halle Tolle.
