SSCC nursing ranks first nationally in pass rates

The Southern State Practical Nursing program graduates have been ranked first in the nation for first time NCLEX-PN pass rates during the April-September 2011 timeframe.
In his report to the SSCC Board of Trustees during their meeting this week, SSCC President Dr. Kevin Boys spoke of the nursing program's achievements.
"Additionally, the Southern State ADN program graduates have ranked 20th out of 79 programs in the state of Ohio and 723rd out of 1,752 programs in the nation," Boys said. "Additionally, the first-time NCLEX-RN pass rate for our last cohort is currently 93.61 percent, which is considerably above the national average and required benchmark. These are outstanding accomplishments and program faculty, students, staff, and director of nursing all need to be congratulated and commended for their efforts towards increasing student outcomes and success."
During the board's September meeting, Dr. Julie Krebs gave an overview of SSCC’s nursing department. Krebs reported on the history of the department, areas of growth, improvements that have been made, future goals, and continuous improvement plans.
Because students from the nursing program will likely work in the area, Krebs said, “We’re training them to take care of our family and friends. We want them not just to work in this community, but to make things better in this community.”
Also during the November meeting this week, SSCC Vice President of Business and Finance Jim Buck reported that fall quarter numbers show a decrease of approximately 10 percent in credit hours compared to last fall.
According to the president's report, the total credit hours enrolled is 36,260, which equals approximately a 10-percent decrease. Total full-time equivalent (FTE) is 2,417.33 (a 10-percent decrease). Total headcount is 3,354, a 9-percent decrease.
During fiscal year 2010, Buck said, there was an enrollment increase of 38 percent.
Buck told the board that a mid-year adjustment to the budget will be submitted in January, and that they will be watching winter FTE numbers closely.
"The adjustment will have to account for the 10-percent (decrease)," Buck said. "We adjusted flat."
Buck also reported that the college had received the report of the state audit, for the fiscal year ending in June 2011. CPA Natalie Stang, of Millhuff-Stang CPA, Inc., who conducted the audit, reported to the board that there were no findings and no suggestions for improvement.
"It's not every day we get to do a post-audit and have nothing to report," Strang said. "It certainly does make our job a lot easier."
Boys also reported that the college had received additional good news with the publican of the December 2011 edition of "Ohio Magazine," which compiled a list of excellence in education honorees. The magazine recognized outstanding teachers at colleges and universities around the state. Southern State had three faculty members on the list: Rainee Angles, speech and theatre; Julia Basham, computer science; and Ken Shull, accounting/business.
In other business:
• At the SSCC Truck Driving Academy, there were 29 participants enrolled for CDL training during October and an estimated 28 are expected in November. Discussions continue with Pickaway Ross Joint Vocational School to partner for CDL training; when the MOU is completed, SSC will shut down the Columbus south classroom (Rickenbacker Air Park location), saving $7,000 rent annually. The CDL Director position was eliminated and staff members were reorganized as a cost-saving move.
• The Patri-Tots Learning Center at the North Campus in Wilmington received a 100-percent compliance rating during a recent state licensing inspection. This is the second time in the past three years the center has achieved such a rating.
