Washington Township Fire and Rescue, in conjunction with Southern Hills Career and Technical Center (SHCTC), completed the first-ever Rope Rescue Technician Course on March 18.
This course meets and exceeds the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) 1006 Standard for Technical Rescue, NFPA 1983 Standard for Life Safety Rope and Equipment and NFPA 1670 Standard on Operations and Training for Technical Search and Rescue Incidents for Rope Rescue Technician I/II.
The Rope Rescue Technician Course provided an intense, five-day, 40-hour training in rope rescue fundamentals, focusing on high and low angle rescue techniques.

Eight students met 26 different practical objectives in this course. The students were exposed to the following skills: equipment selection, inspection and maintenance; knots; anchors; patient packaging; mechanical advantage systems; belaying; lowering systems; rappelling; knot passing through rappels, raising and lowering systems; system safety factors; litter rigging and tending; pick-offs; and stretcher evacuations. These skills were taught using practical applications through scenarios drawn from actual rescue experiences. The students participated in many hands-on activities.
Washington Township Fire and Rescue and Southern Hills CTC deemed the course a huge success. Both are anticipating offering more collaborative courses, which will open more opportunities for all surrounding area departments.
