Sheriff's auction to include firearms

A date has been set for the annual Highland County Sheriff's Office auction, with items confiscated during the course of criminal investigations, as well as real estate properties, going up on the auction block and, for the first time, firearms will also be available for sale.
"Each individual case has items for forfeiture," said Highland County Sheriff Ron Ward, "from firearms to real estate to electronic equipment that we compile, usually, over a year's time. The funds go into the law enforcement trust fund which is used to further criminal cases, like undercover drug cases. It's using bad guys' money to catch more bad guys."
Ward said that the HCSO has a large variety of items, as well as other items no longer needed by various county offices.
For the first time, firearms will be up for auction, according to Ward.
"One of the things we're doing that we've never done before is we're auctioning the firearms that we've confiscated over the past several months," Ward said. "Normally we trade those to firearms dealers and they take our gun at a certain value and they give us a credit, which we use for ammunition and that kind of thing. We've never had a gun auction before, and there is certain criteria you have to follow to do that."
The Highland County Board of Commissioners and the HCSO will offer for sale property and real estate at public auction on Aug. 10 at 4 p.m. at the Highland County Fairgrounds, located at 604 John Street in Hillsboro. The auction will be conducted by Hess Auction Company and all property will be sold to the highest bidder.
The auction bill can be viewed at www.hessauctionco.com. The Highland County commissioners nor the HCSO make no warranty on any items sold, either implied or stated and assume no liability for any item after the sale is commenced. Any announcements made the sate of the sale will take precedent. All sales are final.
The real estate property was forfeited due to criminal activity convictions pertaining to case #09CR153 and case # 09CR199 in the Highland County Common Pleas Court.
