Sen. Husted secures critical funding for American Centrifuge Plant in Piketon

WASHINGTON – Sen. Jon Husted (R-Ohio) today announced that the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) will invest $2.7 billion to strengthen domestic enrichment services over the next 10 years. This funding includes $900 million for Centrus Energy’s American Centrifuge Plant in Piketon.

“It’s in America’s economic and national security interest to invest in uranium enrichment development. The Centrus facility in Piketon is producing a critical resource for our country. This funding is a vital step toward American energy independence and will create jobs and strengthen our domestic energy supply. I will continue to advocate for expanding America’s energy production,” said Husted. 

This announcement comes after Husted sent two letters to the DOE in support of funding for the plant. In April and September 2025, he joined colleagues in writing to DOE Secretary Chris Wright, advocating for the American Centrifuge Plant and domestically produced uranium enrichment.

The American Centrifuge Plant is the only U.S.-owned, U.S.-technology enrichment plant currently in production. Centrus is working to develop and demonstrate a highly efficient uranium enrichment gas centrifuge technology with an important role to play for the national security and energy security of the United States and its allies around the world.

Advocating for the plant builds on Husted’s support for American energy production. Husted’s bipartisan Nuclear REFUEL Act would simplify licensing requirements for nuclear recycling facilities in order to increase nuclear energy production in the U.S. The bill passed the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works on Oct. 29, 2025.
