Sen. Husted calls on Department of Education to help root out waste and fraud, protect taxpayer dollars

WASHINGTON – Sen. Jon Husted (R-Ohio) joined Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) in sending a letter to Department of Education Secretary Linda McMahon urging the Department to partner with the Senate to identify and eliminate waste, fraud and abuse in America’s education system.
 
This letter comes after Husted and Tuberville launched the Education Fraud Task Force. This task force aims to tackle fraud in federal funding in education systems.
 
“Under your leadership, the Department has made great strides in accomplishing many of President Trump’s goals, including supporting school choice, evidence-based literacy and meaningful learning, and eliminating more than $2 billion in unnecessary and divisive spending,” the senators wrote.
 
“Through the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee, we have been named Co-Chairmen of the newly founded Education Fraud Task Force. The task force was created to promote clarity, accountability, and trust in federally funded education and child care programs,” the senators continued.
 
“Our goal is for all Americans to know that money allocated towards funding education will be accounted for and spent wisely. Taxpayers demand that federal investment in our nation’s education is efficient, effective, and transparent. Education is the key to opportunity, and our funding priorities should reflect this,” the lawmakers wrote.
 
“These efforts to stop fraud are critical to safeguarding the resources of hard-working Americans and protecting the sanctity of the education system. We are hopeful that under your leadership, wasteful and ineffective spending will continue to be rooted out,” wrote the senators.
 
“The Education Fraud Task Force asks for the Department of Education’s support to develop strong collaborative efforts and continue the good works of the Department in uncovering, identifying, and preventing fraud. This support will bolster the ability to fight fraud and protect our education systems and students from frivolous and illegal spending schemes,” the senators concluded.
 
This letter builds on Husted’s support to ensure taxpayer dollars are being used correctly. Earlier this year, Husted joined the entire Senate Republican Conference in writing to Gov. Tim Walz (D-Minn.) requesting information regarding the ongoing federal investigations into the alleged fraud and abuse of taxpayer-funded programs.
