Reward offered in Traveller's Rest vandalism

A $1,000 reward is being offered by the Greenfield Historical Society for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the vandal or vandals that recently destroyed stone walls surrounding the back of Traveller's Rest. The dry, stacked walls were pushed over sometime during the weekend of July 31-Aug. 2, 2009. It appears as if nothing was taken; just heaps and piles of stones and cap rock were left where they fell. The two destroyed walls encircle a section of the Old Burying Ground. An anonymous donor has contributed the $1,000 for the reward. If anyone has any information they should contact the Greenfield Police Department at 981-4466 or the Historical Society at 981-7890. It is ironic that just as the Society prepares to dedicate the portion of the rebuilt cemetery wall along McArthur Way, another section of the wall was torn down. On History Day, Oct. 3, the Society will dedicate the McArthur Way wall after two years of work by volunteers under the direction of John Daughtery and his crew. The Front Street section of the wall is cemented together to help it last many more years. Unfortunately, the Society does not have the funds to do the same to the vandalized sections. John Daughtery is working on the drystacking of the fallen wall, as that is what insurance will pay for. About one third of the fallen wall has been re-stacked.[[In-content Ad]]
