Meeting at the White House focuses on Piketon’s role; support for job creation at Wilmington Air Park
In a Dec. 6 meeting at the White House, Ohio Representative-Elect Cliff Rosenberger, R-Clarksville, urged the Obama administration to step up efforts to rebuild America’s nuclear power industry.
According to a news release from Rosenberger, in the meeting, he urged the Obama administration to convene a gathering of private firms and government regulators to work out the issues that are slowing down efforts to jump start work on energy projects now on the drawing board at the U.S.-owned nuclear enrichment facility at Piketon.
Rosenberger also urged the administration to work with the Clinton County Port Authority, owner of the Wilmington Air Park, to help the region develop job creation strategies following the devastating 2009 collapse of DHL’s domestic shipping business.
Rosenberger said that investment will be necessary at the Wilmington Air Park during the coming decade to ensure that the airport “remains a viable engine of job growth for the region.” He explained that runway improvements and security issues will require the cooperation of the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Federal Aviation Administration.
Regarding Piketon, Rosenberger suggested that the federal government must work to ensure that the U.S. remains competitive in advancing nuclear energy technology. “For more than three decades, the U.S. has allowed its nuclear energy industry to decline to a point that we now rely on foreign suppliers of technology and fuel to keep our current power plants operating,” said Rosenberger.
“The livelihoods of our people increasingly depend on our capacity to produce clean energy, especially electricity to fuel our factories, homes and cars,” said Rosenberger. “This can be an exciting initiative that places Ohio in a leading role in our country’s energy independence. Sadly, America has given away its leading role in the industry.”
During the White House meeting, Rosenberger specifically urged the U.S. Department of Energy to accelerate approval of loan guarantees guarantees for firms wishing to build a new power plant and rebuild enrichment capabilities at Piketon.
Rosenberger is scheduled to be sworn in as a member of Ohio’s 129th General Assembly on January 3, 2011.
