MOUNT STERLING – The Pickaway County General Health District (PCGHD) is investigating a shigellosis outbreak associated with Deer Creek State Park near Mt. Sterling.
Individuals are having issues with nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Symptoms usually appear a day or two after being exposed to the bacteria.
Some reported cases have laboratory confirmation of shigellosis.
At this time, the source of the infection is unclear. The individuals in this outbreak visited Deer Creek State Park between June 15 and July 17, 2016.
Shigellosis is an infectious disease that is caused by a group of bacteria called shigella. The bacteria can easily spread from person-to-person when people do not wash their hands properly and a person can become infected by eating or drinking food, water or beverages contaminated by the bacteria.
