Pinwheels planted in remembrance of child abuse victims

The lawn of the Highland County Courthouse was "planted" with 350 pinwheels Friday afternoon in commemoration of Child Abuse Prevention Month.
Each pinwheel represents a case of child abuse or neglect in Highland County during 2010. This year's pinwheels number nearly 100 more than last year's 266, a sign that instances child abuse are on the rise in Highland County.
"Every year we use this event to show that child abuse and neglect is a real problem, not only in our community, but across the nation," said Wendy Jacobs, director of Highland County Children Services.
The theme for the county's prevention month is “You Make A World Of Difference.”
Daisy Troop 2420 helped Children Services employees plant the pinwheels, and then spent the remainder of the event running and playing tag among the flower-shaped wheels.
Children Services will also recognize individuals and organizations for their achievements during a dinner Thursday in recognition of Child Abuse Prevention Month. The event will be held at the Ponderosa banquet room at 6 p.m.
This event will focus on prevention and recognition as part of a plan to break the cycle of child abuse and neglect.
Jacobs said area residents who want to volunteer, or need to report an incident of abuse or neglect can call (937) 393-3111.
