The Penn Township Trustees will meet later this week to discuss the next step for the township following the death last week of their fiscal officer.

Philip Davis, who had been the fiscal officer for the past seven years, died Dec. 22.

Trustee Jeff Bumgarner said the trustees will be meeting later this week to discuss what will happen next.

"Someone will probably be appointed," Bumgarner said. "But we haven't got together yet to talk about an appointment."

Bumgarner said that in the interim Highland County Auditor Bill Fawley is handling the township's fiscal issues.

He said that most likely the trustees will accept applications for a replacement for Davis.

"He was a great guy," Bumgarner said of Davis. "We were sorry to lose him."

Director of Elections with the Highland County Board of Elections Steve Witham said that the trustees will have to appoint an interim officer.

"It will be up to the township trustees to appoint an interim officer," Witham said. "It was going to be on the ballot in November, so there will be not need for a special election. The interim fiscal officer can run if they want to and then be elected in November."

Witham said that he believed the trustees had approximately 30 days to make the appointment.
