Nina Turner, Frances Strickland guests of Highland County Democratic Party Aug. 3

The Highland County Democratic Party will hold its annual picnic on Sunday, Aug. 3 at the AmVets Park, North Shore Drive, Hillsboro, from 3:30-6:30 p.m.

The featured speaker for the event is Nina Turner, who is running for Secretary of State.

Turner is currently a state senator in Ohio and a frequent MSNBC guest.

According to Highland County Democratic Party Chairperson Dinah Phillips, Turner is a dynamic speaker and has many innovative ideas, which will not suppress the right to vote, for the Secretary of State office.

Former First Lady of Ohio Frances Strickland will also be present to talk about the other statewide candidates running for office.

"Frances loves coming to Highland County, and we're fortunate that she will grace us with her presence," Phillips said. "Many have expressed an interest in seeing Frances again.

"Marek Tyszkiewicz is running for the Second District Congressional seat. If you have not heard him speak, this event is a great opportunity to learn more about him and his ideas for the district," Phillips said.

• Highland County Commissioner candidate Randy Mustard will also be at the picnic. Phillips said Mustard is known in Paint Township, where he serves as a trustee, for "getting the job done."

"He is one who can be called 24/7 for assistance with a problem and will listen to your opinions before making a decision," Phillips said. "If given the chance, Randy will make an excellent county commissioner."

• Common Pleas Court Judge Rocky Coss, who is running unopposed, will also be present.

"He has done a fabulous job while on the bench," Phillips said. "We couldn't be more proud of Rocky."

Food will include chicken tenders from Ponderosa, potato salad, slaw, baked beans, desserts and drinks. Entertainment will be provided by Andy West's band and by Linda Griffith.

The event is free to the public with a freewill donation accepted. An auction will be conducted by Frank Grover, and door prizes will be awarded.
