Lynchburg man killed in 3-car crash on S.R. 138

The Wilmington Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is currently investigating a three-vehicle fatal crash that claimed the life of a Lynchburg man Friday. 

According to the Post, at approximately 4:03 p.m. a 2008 Chrysler PT Cruiser, driven by Henry F. Stroop, 64, of Lynchburg, was traveling northbound on state Route 138 near Tolle Road. At that same time, a 1996 Saturn driven by Kevin F. Dehaas II, 21, of Hillsboro, and a 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier, driven by Mickey N. Berry, 23 of Sardinia, were traveling southbound on state Route 138. 

Dehaas attempted to pass the vehicle driven by Berry, according to the Post, in a "no passing zone." Both vehicles began braking, lost control and struck the PT cruiser head on. 

Stroop was pronounced dead at the scene by Highland County Coroner Dr. Paul Terrell. Dehaas and a passenger in the Cavalier, Penny Knoche, were transported by CareFlight to Miami Valley Hospital. Berry and a passenger in the Saturn, Michelle Cowdrey, 23 of Bainbridge, were transported by Hillsboro Fire and Rescue to Highland District Hospital. A second passenger in the Saturn, Charles Davis, was not injured. 

The crash remains under investigation by the OSHP. 

Sgt. Rob New, assistant post commander said, "This is another glaring example of the inherent dangers of the unsafe operation of a motor vehicle. This crash ended in the tragic, untimely and unnecessary death of an innocent person. Traffic laws are in place to permit the safe flow of traffic on our roadways. All too often, when those basic laws are ignored, motorists leave a path of destruction in their wake."
