Lt. Gov. Taylor: Columbus man pleads guilty to attempted insurance fraud

COLUMBUS – Ohio Lieutenant Governor Mary Taylor confirmed that Columbus resident Jimmie Spurlock has pleaded guilty in the Franklin County Court of Common Pleas to attempted insurance fraud involving $12,000.
“Insurance fraud hurts all Ohioans by driving up the cost of insurance,” said Taylor, also director of the Ohio Department of Insurance. “We will continue our aggressive fight against insurance fraud to protect consumers.”
An Ohio Department of Insurance investigation found that Spurlock falsely stated he was a passenger in an auto accident to receive insurance claim payment for his alleged injuries.
In 2013, three of Spurlock’s relatives were in an accident and contacted Spurlock for assistance with the vehicle. The relatives and Spurlock filed insurance claims. He submitted medical bills seeking chiropractic treatment reimbursement.
Ohioans aware of insurance fraud are urged to report it to the Ohio Department of Insurance by calling its fraud hotline at 1-800-686-1527. Insurance fraud information is available at www.insurance.ohio.gov.
