Local veterinarians Dr. Robert Sharp and Dr. Reid Sharp and dentist Dr. Lesia Langston-McKenna this week provided a much-needed dental procedure for Chica, a 6-year-old Belgian Malinois and the Greenfield Police Department's K-9 unit.

According to Dustin Malone, Patrolman/K9 Handler for the Greenfield Police Department, his partner, Chica, had a procedure to fix a broken upper tooth that had been damaged during a training exercise.

"After speaking with Dr. Robert Sharp and Dr. Reid Sharp about her tooth, it was their opinion that something needed to be done, primarily because she is a working dog," Officer Malone said.

"They referred the procedure to an animal dentist in Columbus and the quote was $1,500. I already knew this was going to be an issue with the department's budget so I planned on paying for it myself if I needed to. Then I received a call from Dr. Sharp and they came up with a better plan.

"They informed me that they spoke with Dr. Lesia Langston-McKenna and they were going to volunteer their time and services to do this procedure for free."

Officer Malone said he wanted to let the community know that these individuals took time out of their day to help out – at no cost; thus saving the Greenfield Police Department and taxpayers' money.

"It is great to live in a community where there are people like this who don't mind offering their services for a good cause," Officer Malone said.

Chica is still recuperating from surgery. After a checkup next week, she should be back on the force.
