Local Toastmasters celebrate five years

GEORGETOWN – The Brown County Toastmasters Club is celebrating five years in 2016. The organization has helped dozens with their public speaking skills over the past years.
The Brown County Toastmasters Club meets the fourth Wednesday at 6:15 p.m. most months (schedule changes in November and December because of holidays). Speeches start promptly at 6:30 p.m. and guests are welcome to every meeting.
Toastmasters International provides materials for members to not only become better speakers but to also become better leaders. Manuals and mentoring are provided every step of the way to improvement. Critiques are always positive and encouraging to the speaker.
Many join Toastmasters to attain personal development goals at their place of employment.
Harold Waibel, who was visited the Brown County Club recently, belongs to the American Modern Insurance Club which meets at their office in Amelia. American Modern hosts a club for employees and holds many district Toastmaster events.
“I was never afraid to be in front of people. I was on stage in college and enjoyed being in front of people,” said Waibel, “but I wanted to get better.”
Mande Payton works for Hewlett-Packard and uses Toastmasters as goal for her personal growth with the company.

“My purpose for being in Toastmasters is to work on speaking and to improve on it. It is part of my personal growth through Hewlett-Packard,” said Payton.
Several attorneys belong to the club. Christine Tailer, an attorney and author, doesn’t need presentation help, but she does like Toastmasters for another reason.
“I joined Toastmasters not so much to learn how to speak, but to learn how to listen. I have so enjoyed listening to everyone’s speeches, and topics, and discussions that have emerged from this meeting,” said Tailer.
Listening is half the fun and you don’t have to be employed to join. Jerry Sanders, of Russellville, is retired like several other members.
“I was in the Russellville Kiwanis Club and, Ron Dvorachek and Jerry Schumacher were talking about the Toastmasters Club, so I just came uninvited and have been enjoying it ever since,” said Sanders.
Connie Webb, treasurer of the club, agrees with Sanders about enjoying the club.
“I joined Toastmasters to have something else to do, and I thought it would be a very nice group of people and it has been,” said Webb.
There are goals for the club for speaking, educating and developing leadership. One of those goals is important to Becky Cropper who has been involved with youth in Brown County for a long time. Cropper is the club’s vice-president of education.
“My goal was to do outreach for youth to increase their public speaking skills. We are pleased we have been able to do that. We have been able to do that with some trainings with FFA and some youth contests (sponsored by the club),” said Cropper.
Ralph Jennings is president of the club. Jennings’ reason for joining is the common reason most people become interested in club.
“I want to keep my thoughts and speeches more organized, and I am learning that in Toastmasters,” said Jennings.
Jennings invites anyone who is interested to attend the next meeting 6:15 p.m. Wednesday, May 25 at the Brown County Educational Service Center at 9231 Hamer Road in Georgetown.
