The Highland County Sheriff's Office is investigating the death of a 13-year-old boy from the Boston community in eastern Highland County, Sheriff Ron Ward confirmed.

The sheriff also confirmed his office has spoken to faculty, staff and students in the Hillsboro City Schools regarding the death of the Middle School student.

The death occurred Saturday, Feb. 5 near the student's residence, Ward said.

There was nothing to indicate signs of foul play.

Ward said his office is waiting for a report from the Highland County coroner before commenting on the investigation.

Hillsboro City Schools Superintendent Rick Earley confirmed the HCSO was in the school on Monday, Feb. 7, concerning allegations of possible bullying. Earley said no action has been taken against any Hillsboro students.

"We're cooperating with the investigation and we'll see it through and go wherever it leads us," Earley said. "At this point, we have nothing to go on. If we find that there needs to be disciplinary action, we will take the {appropriate steps}."

"Right now, our hearts go out to this young man's family," Earley said.[[In-content Ad]]
