LaRose spokesman confirms security incident at Secretary’s home

A spokesman for Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose confirmed Monday that multiple law enforcement agencies responded to a security incident late Sunday night involving the Secretary and his family at their suburban Columbus home.

“Secretary LaRose received and opened mail at his home that contained a powdery substance and written material of a threatening nature,” LaRose Spokesman Dan Lusheck said. “After coming into contact with the contents of the letter, the Secretary notified his security staff and took appropriate actions to protect his family from any immediate harm.

“At the request of local authorities, multiple local, state and federal law enforcement agents responded to the Secretary’s home, including hazmat and bomb detection units. The suspicious materials were collected for further investigation, and the Secretary and his family are safe. The incident remains under active investigation.”

Secretary LaRose has previously received numerous personal threats of physical harm in recent months, resulting in an increased security presence. At the request of Governor DeWine, the Department of Public Safety and the Ohio State Highway Patrol have provided security consultation and personal protective services in the weeks prior to the presidential election.
