HPD Officer Butler earns bravery award for 'selfless' act

Chief Todd Whited of the Hillsboro Police Department presented a commendation for bravery to Officer Brian Butler at the opening of Hillsboro city council's July meeting, praising the officer for making "a courageous decision that ultimately saved the life of a 42-year-old woman."

Whited said that Butler responded to the home of the woman, who he said was suicidal and had set fire to a room in her residence, in the early morning hours of June 18. Despite resistance from the individual, Butler managed to rescue the woman before her bedroom became completely engulfed in flames within minutes of his arrival.

"With the life and safety of a citizen as his priority, Officer Brian Butler risked his own life to save that of another," Whited said.

"Officer Butler's quick thinking, which likely was enhanced by his military and law enforcement experiences, and his ability to act immediately and selflessly resulted in a life saved. For his actions, I thank and commend Officer Butler for a job very well done."

Butler received a standing ovation from those in the room, including city council members, Hillsboro Mayor Drew Hastings and Hillsboro Safety and Service Director Todd Wilkin. Members of Butler's family, along with several of his coworkers, were in attendance for the presentation of his award.

Council president Lee Koogler also thanked Butler on behalf of council.

"Thank you for your service to the city and for the heroism that you have certainly shown in the line of duty," Koogler told Butler.
