Hospital receives healthy checkup

Number two in the nation.  That was the result of a recent report published in the May issue of Modern Healthcare that named Adena Greenfield Medical Center (AGMC) the second most profitable critical-access hospital in the United States.
The report was generated from data collected by the American Hospital Directory, a resource for healthcare executives, consultants and other healthcare-related professionals. The information compiled includes both public and private sources including Medicare claims data, hospital cost reports and other files obtained from the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).
AGMC’s position as a critical access hospital means that it is certified to receive cost-based reimbursement for direct care services from Medicare. The reimbursement received is intended to improve a critical access hospital’s financial performance.
To be considered a Critical Access Hospital, facilities must be located in a rural area 35 miles from another hospital, or 15 miles from another hospital in mountainous terrain or areas with only secondary roads.
Factors contributing to AGMC’s profitability include a number of supporting services the facility receives through its affiliation with Adena Health System, including information technology, human resources, finance and other infrastructures.
In addition, through its status as a Critical Access Hospital, AGMC has access to certain funding opportunities provided by grants designed specifically for Critical Access Hospitals through the Ohio Department of Health. All of these factors play a role in cost savings that provide the hospital with profit used for items such as replacing worn equipment and maintaining the facility.
AGMC’s affiliation with Adena Health System also provides a unique level of access to specialty services and physicians that is most beneficial for patients in a community the size of Greenfield.
According to Sandy Smith, RN, MSN, Ph.D., this type of availability is crucial to the Hospital’s success and sustainability.
“Our affiliation with Adena certainly brings a huge value to the Greenfield community and surrounding areas with the variety of services and specialists provided through the System,” said Smith.
“This most recent news of being named second most profitable in the nation amongst Critical Access Hospitals is something we are very thrilled to have achieved.
“Having such a supportive community in Greenfield is an important contributor to our continued success as a trusted healthcare resource for our area…a role we are proud to serve.”
Adena Greenfield Medical Center is a 25-bed inpatient facility that specializes in medical-surgical and rehabilitation services in addition to outpatient therapies and diagnostic services. For more information, call (937) 981-9247 or log on to www.adena.org.[[In-content Ad]]
