Hillsboro Safety and Service Director Ralph Holt has submitted his resignation, Mayor Dick Zink told The Highland County Press today.

Holt has served eight years as safety and service director during Zink's two terms as mayor, following the 2003 election. He was selected by a group of business and community leaders appointed by Zink.

He submitted his resignation in a letter to the mayor this morning.

The resignation was effective Dec. 31.

"The safety-service director is a thankless job most of the time," Zink said, "especially in a bad economy."

Zink has praised Holt and the city department managers for maintaining their respective budgets during the ongoing recession.

"We had earlier predictions that we'd end the year at around $70,000," Zink said. "But everyone's worked together, and we'll have an unencumbered general fund balance of more than $400,000."

Zink said Holt will be working from his residence in a new job next year.

• Hillsboro mayor-elect Drew Hastings said he will hold a press conference Tuesday, Jan. 3 “to announce and present Hillsboro’s new Safety/Service Director as well as other personnel additions.”

The conference will be held at the city administration building at 10 a.m.
