Edward Lee McClain
(1861-1934)
Edward McClain was an inventor and businessman whose success allowed him to donate the funds to build Greenfield’s high school, vocational building and athletic fields.
He was born on May 30, 1861. In November 1881, he founded the E.L. McClain Manufacturing Co.
While working at his father’s harness shop, McClain developed the horse-collar pad fastened by an elastic steel hook, which permitted the pad to be readily attached to and detached from the horse collar.
From this device grew the E.F. McClain Manufacturing Company.
Construction on Greenfield’s high school began in 1914.
In 1915, Greenfield’s Board of Education named the new building in McClain’s honor.
McClain’s business talents and generosity have greatly blessed Greenfield and Highland County.
Note: A collaborative effort including the Greenfield Exempted Village Schools, the McClain Alumni Association and the village of Greenfield is under way in order to honor Mr. and Mrs. Edward Lee McClain during the 2016 Greene Countrie Towne Festival.
