Granville Barrere
1878-1954
Granville Barrere was an attorney and publisher who edited the Hillsboro News Herald and became noted for his editorials dealing with the problems of interest to the community.
Barrere studied law, intending to make that his life’s work.
In 1908, however, he decided to accept the position of editor of the News Herald, where he succeeded his father, George W. Barrere, who continued to write editorials and watch over the operation of the paper.
Following in his father’s footsteps, Granville became adept at crafting editorials.
Under Granville’s leadership, the paper purchased their first typesetting machine in 1916.
During Granville’s tenure, The News Herald earned many awards as the best weekly newspaper published in Ohio.
Barrere’s wife, Sarah Walker Barrere, was one of the founders of the Highland County Historical Society.
Many of the rare items on exhibit at the Highland House are from their family.
